A practical and beautiful kitchen tool with a smooth rounded handle to grip and a surprisingly sharp blade. Use it to cut dough, herbs, cheese and even corn off the cob. It's satisfying to hold, and excellent for chopping in a container to keep the juices in, for example tomatoes (something you can't do with a knife).
Available in Maire or Rātā timber. Each chopper is individually handmade, so grain, colouring and shape will vary. Finished with a food-safe, plant-based oil and wax, and presented with a tag detailing the origin of the wood and its features.
12.5cm x 11.5cm x 2.5cm
Black maire is a native Aotearoa timber highly regarded historically for tool and weapon making. This timber comes from a salvaged log found at an old logging site in the Pureora Forest, in the central North Island.
Rātā is a native tree with glossy dark green leaves and trunks that are often gnarled and twisted. It's best known for the brilliant red flowers that appear in profusion in summer. The timber used here was salvaged from a volcanic era river log.
Made by fine woodworker Tom Muir in Te Miro, Aotearoa. See more fine woodwork pieces from Tom Muir here.
Care: Wash in warm water, soapy if needed, and dry. Not for the dishwasher, and don't leave it sitting in the pot. Re-oil when you like with coconut, olive or walnut oil, wiping off the surplus after a few minutes. Sharpen the blade on 400-grit wet-and-dry paper laid flat.
We ship nationwide across Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally to selected destinations.
