Selection Massale Pinot Noir, Central Otago 2023

Regular price $29.00

Tasting note
A gentle, moderated Pinot Noir from a prestigious Organic and Biodynamic vineyard in Bendigo, Central Otago. A brilliant, crimson red in appearance. Sweet, ripe red berry fruits with a softened palate owing to maturation in both aged French oak and stainless steel. Supple mouthfeel with plush, dense fruit weight, revealing many layers and a depth of flavour. Youthful and approachable now, though will gain complexity over next 3-4 years.

Vintage and viticulture
The fruit was sourced entirely from the Quartz Reef Vineyard in Bendigo, Central Otago, New Zealand. Certified organic (BioGro #5569) and certified biodynamic (Demeter #150). Soils are ancient alluvial riverbed, heavy in schist and quartz. 2022 was an immaculate growing season for Bendigo, with the rain and cooler weather seeming to subside by January, yielding a combination of beautifully ripe, intensely flavoured fruit with good retention of natural acidity by mid March.

Selection Massale is the French term used to describe the traditional method of vineyard propagation and involves making a selection of particular vines within an established vineyard and using this as the genetic stock to plant a new one.

For the 2023 vintage winemaker Dan Gillett secured a BioGro certified organic vineyard in Marlborough with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner and Pinot Noir, and will supplement that with smaller volumes of Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Merlot and Malbec from other certified growers.
