This is a rare and unique stone usually found in the inanga, tangiwai and dark kawakawa varieties. Named after the shining cuckoo whose green and white shimmering plumage are similar to the thin bands of light that cause a chatoyant effect like a cat’s eye as the stone is moved about.
About Ihakara Smith
Local pounamu carver Ihakara (Tama) Smith (Ngāi Tahu) trained under master carver Jon Jeet, with whom he continues to collaborate. Tama sources stone from the rivers where he grew up on the West Coast of Te Wai Pounamu (the South Island). When he is not carving, Tama passes on his knowledge through Tūhono Taonga, Tūhono Tāngata, an organisation that teaches carving as a tool of engagement and wellbeing with young people, homeless whānau and others.
